Guide to Sheet Magnet
Understanding the different types of sheet magnet and their uses.
Sheet magnet is a thin layer of plastic, embedded with millions of magnetized steel particles that act like tiny magnets. The plastic retains the flexible quality of the sheet. All sheet magnet cuts easily to any size or shape with scissors or a shop knife and steel straight edge. Contact us for custom size and quantity pricing.
Sheet magnet thickness is measured in mils. A mil is a thickness of 1/1000th of an inch. The thicker sheet magnet is, the stronger it is. All magnets hold best when mounted directly on steel like a refrigerator door. Self adhesive sheet magnet can be used on the back of a paper item to hold it best.
- 15 mil (0.15") thick is very flexible and recommended for cost saving use for photo magnet and light weight paper objects.
- 20 mil (0.20") thick is flexible and recommended for use with paper objects.
- 30 mil (0.30") thick is less flexible and recommended for use for quality feeling save the date magnets and medium weight paper objects.
- 60 mil (0.60") thick is rigid and recommended for use only when 30 mil is not quite strong enough.
Sheet magnet sticks best to solid steel like a refrigerator door. Sheet magnet is usually only magnetically attractive on one side. On white vinyl sheet magnet, the magnetic side is the dark back side. On self adhesive sheet magnet, the magnetic side is the non-sticky side. Some sheet magnet is double facing magnetically. It is sold for specific uses needing the magnet to stick on both sides.
Self adhesive sheet magnet can be used for magnetic signage by printing the sign or art on regular paper and then adhering the paper to the self adhesive side of the sheet magnet. Just peel off the protective paper from the front of the magnet sheet and adhere the paper to the magnet.
White or black vinyl sheet magnet has a thin sheet of colored vinyl adhered to the front surface. It can be printed with silk screen inks, markers, ball point pens and pencils. It can also be painted with spray paint. Printing can be done on self adhesive paper and the paper stuck to the white surface of white vinyl sheet magnet.
Magnetic paper is sheet magnet of about 8 to 10 mils thick adhered to a paper layer on the front. It can be used in an inkjet printer only. A laser printer develops too much heat and can damage the magnetic paper which could then damage the printer.
Magically Magnetic manufacturers a material called Magnamount that looks very much like white vinyl sheet magnet. It is not magnet but is made to act like a steel sheet. Magnets stick to Magnamount like the stick to steel although they stick to solid steel with more strength. Sheet magnet sticks very well to Magnamount material.
Sheet magnet also sticks very well to our Magically Magnetic Paint on walls. It is the tiny metallic particles in the magnetic paint that sheet magnet sticks to. Please go to our magnetic paint page to learn more about magnetic paint and how to use it.
